Never Word Pronunciation

I complained the other day about the SV pronunciation of the word never. Turns out, it was my hyphenation. I hyphenated the word in Sibelius the way I learned that’s best for a singer: make the second syllable start on a consonant. We learned to let the vowel sound of the first syllable extends then start the 2nd on the consonant (in this case, “v”).

When I hyphenated “nev-er”, SV go it right. I suppose there are other examples in the language that probably would benefit from different hyphenation.

I still don’t understand why SV insists on pronouncing a terminal “-ly” as “lie” and not “lee”. This is not a hyphenation issue.

Two things for you, both illustrated in screenshot.

  1. In general, no need to hyphenate your lyrics at all. Don’t enter “nev-er” just enter “never” and put a + on the second syllable. SV will then have the vocal model split it in the correct place.
  2. I put in terminally and it came out “lee” (iy is the phoneme for the “ee” of “lee”).

Thought I’d have a go at this myself using SV1 and voicebank Jun…

I didn’t like how terminally was initially pronounced with termunulee so changed it thus…

Changing the length of vowels and consonants allowed me to place the sounds where I expected to hear them…
