Is there a reason for using crotchets all the way through, I think it quickly starts to sound ‘robotic’ beccause there is no beginning or end to a verse/phrase here, maybe a one bar pause between verses would help, with the last verse note held slightly?
At 1:27 something weird happens to the organ? Interesting but discordant, I assume that is deliberate and sets up for the slightly spooky atmosphere at the end?
Hi Mechie.
I wanted to capture the sound of an actual church congregation in the religious tradition I grew up in. It was very common to add an unwritten emphasis on the first note. I deliberately exaggerated that for effect. The organ was fed through Ableton’s microtuner. It starts as 12edo and then drifts to another tuning system to reflect the darkening tone of the lyrics.
Thank you for listening!
I agree that the phrases could use some breaths inserted. Overall I find this very good though the drift in the tuning of the organ (almost drifting bells) has a hard time not sounding extraneous.
I am a microtonalist as well and I really would like the ability to put a scala file into SV. Right now my work around is to use Melodydne which can be painful. That is what I did here is wrote on Sibelius with pianoteq in 17, scordatura and then tuning the vocal by hand (not my best work at all and not nearly as nice as your piece) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQUGX9tgim8
Hi Chris.
Wow! Great job on your piece! I’ve never written a full microtonal score before, and find the prospect quite daunting. Have you delved into all the cool notational devices? (Although I wouldn’t know where to begin with 17edo notation…)
Thank you for sharing!
Thank you. To be honest I do not want to take the time to get into the notation details, so I use scordatura. It is very unlikely my music will outlive me so its wasted time to me. I have a number of student piano pieces in scordatura and my thoughts are that these would be more acessible without getting into interpeting the added notation. https://www.chrisvaisvil.com/
its on my list to revive my site.
