Anytime I want to open Vocoflex or Synthesizer V, my DAW crashes. Tested on two machines - Windows 11 with Cubase 15, and Windows 10 with Cubase 14. The behavior is always the same: If the project is empty - no virtual instruments, the plugins load fine, but once the project gains some mass, loading a Dreamtonics plugin crashes the entire DAW.
Mind you, my computer is fully up to date, 1 Intel CPU with 20 physical (28 logical) cores and 128 GB RAM so it’s no rookie, it’s a proper war machine.
Right now, if I want to load Vocoflex or Synth V, I need to disable all the virtual instruments in a project so I can work further. Once the plugins are loaded, re-activating the instruments is fine, until I close the project and want to re-open it. A project with active Vocoflex or Synth V cannot be loaded, the DAW crashes again. Dreamtonics plugins simply cannot load together with heavier virtual instruments (like kontakt, omnisphere or slate drums).
Anyone experiencing the same? Anyone has a solution? Thanks!
I use cubase 15 on an intel cpu. I guess you got a 14700k or 265k - that should not happen. What do you mean with a proper amount of vsti and inserts ? In my projects i got about 40 vsti and 20 insert effects. No problem with a 12900k.
So the questions are:
how many vsti’s do you load ?
how many insert effects do you load ?
which audio interface have you got ?
is it synth v pro 1 or 2 ?
have you tried it without vocoflex ? (i don’t have vocoflex)
It seems I found the culprit. Kontakt does this. Even if it’s an empty project with a single instance of Kontakt, no Dreamtonics plugin will load. That applies to all, Vocoflex, Synth V1 and Synth V2.
Crash dump says nothing because the program freezes and I have to kill it manually via task manager.
My old computer was i7 4700, my new computer is i7 14700, 10 years difference, but both behave the same in this case.
I think it’s also worth mentioning that if I load a Dreamtonics plugin for the first time in a “clean” project (without kontakt), it takes forever to load. Like 30 seconds of nothing but waiting for the plugin to load. Once it’s active, other instances load instantly, but if I remove all the instances and later want to add a new track with a Dreamtonics plugin, it takes forever again. It critically slows the flow and absolutely kills the motivation
ok - lets dive in a bit deeper. I think thats two problems.
Loading time - do you use m.2 ssd’s ? If not - what’s your harddrive ?
I use 2 samsung 980 pro - load time is for really heavy songs about15 sec - normally 5-10 sec
Kontakt - which version do you use (5/6/7/8) ? vst3 or vst2 ?
I use Kontakt 8 on vst3 and have many instances. For every instrument i use one instance of kontakt (not more of 1 instance in one instrument), So i.e. for a string quartett a got 4 instances of kontakt instead of 1 instance with 4 instruments spreaded to 4 midi channels
Why do i do this ? I use cubase and cubase is not the best to use multiprocessor support. Cubase is dependant of using p-cores of your cpu - and uses often the primary core. So having a fast 1. p-core is better then having many slow p-cores.But that should be fine with your 14700.
Another question: do you use a nvidia graphics card ?
If yes the prompt in google ai the question “optimal nvidia settings for cubase/kontakt” - that helps a lot. I.e. i only install the studio driver of nvidia.
yes everything is installed on m.2 drive, and all the big data like Kontakt libraries, sample banks, sound effects etc. are on a secondary internal hard drive (that doesn’t apply for any of the Dreamtonics plugins)
In fact I do use nVidia 3080 card, always on a standard/gaming driver. Ever installed a studio driver once and had some minor issues with it. I’ve always had a better experience with standard/home settings of a computer, than a “pro” computer, since working with audio is heavily dependant on a realtime performance and multimedia, just like gaming.
My old PC had also nVidia 970
Versions of Kontakt - it was happening with all - 6, 7 and 8. I use vst3 for everything. And I also use one instance per instrument. But just as I said, Cubase crashes even with a single instance active.
deactivating multiprocessor support in kontakt
open standalone → file → options → engine → deactivate multiprocessor or put to 1
nvidia settings:
3D settings → add cubase.exe
power management mode → perfer maximum performance
setup g-sync: uncheck or enable for full screen mode
your cpu has some problems with intel-microcode
→ save your bios profile
→ install newest bios (microcode 0x12F)
→ set default bios profile and try
→ if it works try it with your profile
As i said - i use 12900k on z690 chipset. I can change the notes in a track of sv2 while playbacking music - it renders in realtime without spikes (not on heavy projects).
Avoid the Gaming driver at all costs. Studio driver is the way ahead. Search through the Cubase forum and you’ll find countless times this comes up as a source of various problems. Can’t say that this is connected in your case, but you should lose all the Nvidia bloatware either way.
Working fine here on Windows 11 / Cubase 15 Pro with plenty of 3rd party plugins, including Kontakt.
