This was a hard one to write. It’s a lament about realizing that you’re going to lose someone you love and being helpless to stop it. It’s also about coming to terms with mortality – and hoping for something more.
Thief
She was sitting
alone in the dark
and she whispered,
I love you
Then it hit me,
and tore me apart
first my Father,
and now her, too
I’d give up everything
Just to make you whole again
She was fading
and losing her spark
How I wished
it was untrue
I think you feel it getting close
And it’s the thing you yearn for most
They say the Lord comes like a thief
I hope He also takes this grief
(you’ve been called home)
Then she left me
with one final sigh
So I kissed her
Goodbye
I love you
I love you
I think you felt it getting close
So you could now give up the ghost
They say your soul has been released
I hope that someday I’ll believe
