Dictionaries For Newbies

IMO, SynthV help w.r.t. Dictionaries is not very helpful. Or perhaps it assumes a level of sophistication and familiarity I do not possess. So I have some questions:

  • I created a dictionary but when I tried to use it on a SynthV project, it ignored it. Perhaps it was badly created, but there’s not a lot of guidance
  • If I have a hyphenated word, do I include the hyphens in the word, or what? Frinstance, the word never. Do I enter it “never” or “ne-ver”?
  • While on that, “never” in particular drives me up the wall. It’s a very common word, but SynthV insists on pronouncing it as “nee ver”. Also, any word that ends in “ly” is pronounced as “lie” not “lee”. “Lee” is far and away the more common pronunciation!
  • Does a dictionary honor capitalized words? I’m writing a musical based on the story of Job, which SynthV pronounces as “j ah b”, so I have to change it to “joowb” (“j ow b” doesnt work for some reason). But I only want it pronounced that way when its a proper name.
  • Is there some order in which a dictionary should be applied? I’ve tried applying as I said to a project which already had the MIDI imported and a voice assigned. No effect. I thought maybe create the project, assign a voice, specify the dictionary, then import the MIDI. Also failed.

This would be a nice topic for a tutorial, I think.

Thanks in advance for any insight!
